The moving words of Anne Frank have taken many forms on screen and stage, but "Anne Frank: Within & Without" may be the first production to turn them into a puppet show. It's a daring concept that manifests in a kind of macabre beauty as human actors manipulate the doll-like puppets, moving them fluidly throughout an exact replica of the annex rooms where Frank and her family hid during the Holocaust. More than just a re-enactment of Frank's Diary, the show explores the world outside the Secret Annex as well, with haunting scenes demonstrating the rise of European fascism and anti-Semitism during Nazi oppression and persecution. With post-show talk-backs after every show at the Center of Puppetry Arts, "Anne Frank: Within & Without" is a chance to re-engage with a familiar tale through the lens of a performance unlike any other. Witness the classic antics of America's favorite ditzy redhead and her Cuban crooner hubby as the beloved '50s sitcom "I Love Lucy" is transformed into a live stage show. Step back in time onto the Desilu soundstage, where a charming host will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the latest hi-fi technology that makes this new thing called "television" possible. Then, the show starts, with Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel up to their usual hilarious misadventures in the familiar cozy surroundings of their New York apartment building and the famed Tropicana Nightclub, where The Ricky Ricardo Orchestra delights with "Babalu" and other Cuban dance numbers. In between scenes, the Crystaltone Singers perform live advertising jingles from the show's newest sponsors (Brylcreem, anyone?) in perfect '50s-style harmony. This is your chance to be a member of the studio audience at the taping of two classic "I Love Lucy" episodes -- "The Benefit" (Lucy agrees to get Ricky to perform at a benefit for her women's club, as long as she's the star of the show) and "Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined" (drops from the eye doctor make Lucy's vision blurry just as she's about to audition for a movie role). Don't miss the show that "TV Guide" calls "the most entertaining stage production ... in years -- including Broadway" when it comes to Atlanta's Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. [less-]

Drawing inspiration from one of "A Streetcar Named Desire" playwright Tennessee Williams' most surreal dramas, Atlanta Ballet's "Camino Real" is a dreamy fusion of dance and theater that follows a former boxing champ stranded in a lonely desert town. There, our hero Kilroy's fighting spirit galvanizes the local lost souls, who include a former courtesan named Marguerite; an innocent beauty, Esmeralda, who is peddled in the town square by her Gypsy mother; Gutman, a menacing hotel proprietor; and a burnt-out charmer named, naturally, Casanova. A hypnotic tale of good versus evil unfolds in this city of dual realities, as Kilroy brings a new sense of hope to citizens who have gone without for all too long. [less-]
