A single question changed American pop culture: "Norman, Is That You?" And even though the hilarious answer is bound up in the Broadway smash of the same name, there "is" a little bit of Norman in comedies like "Ellen", "Will & Grace" and "Modern Family". For when it opened in 1970, "Norman, Is That You?" was the first play to treat homosexuality in an entirely open and comedic manner, inaugurating a new era of acceptance. Now Out of Box Theatre presents a recently updated version of this classic farce. After his wife ditches him for his own brother, Ben heads to New York to find his adult son Norman. But instead of the reassurance he's seeking, Ben's rocked again when he discovers the truth behind Norman's orientation as well as his son's flamboyant, elitist boyfriend. Patrick Hill directs this exciting new production. [less-]

Roth is France's leading pipe organ virtuoso and is the titular organist at the famous Paris church St-Sulpice, where he masterfully bangs away on a five-tiered pipe organ that drives pressurized air through selective pipes to create the instrument's signature intense sound. The creative high of the Harlem Renaissance gave way to the devastating low of the Great Depression in the early 1930s. Written by Atlanta's own Pearl Cleage, "Blues for an Alabama Sky" captures the spirit of this unique period in history, exploring the music, culture and hardships of the time through the eyes of four friends facing turning points in their lives. Gorgeous blues singer Angel's lost her job at the famed Cotton Club, along with her best friend Guy, a costumer who dreams of designing dresses for Josephine Baker in Paris. Their neighbor Delia is trying to open a family planning clinic, while their friend Sam, a doctor, works at Harlem Hospital and delivers bootleggers' babies on the side. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Cleage's landmark drama, which remains as timely today as when it first premiered on the Alliance Theatre stage in 1995. [less-]

It's 1960 and Parisian lothario Bernard has it good. His three fiancées, one French, one German and one American, are all beautiful airline hostesses with frequent -- but never overlapping -- layovers in Paris. And thanks to Bernard's faithful maid, who swaps out the photographs in his apartment according to schedule, the women will never find out about each other. That is until a new, faster Boeing jet throws the airline schedules out of whack and Bernard finds himself with all three women on his hands at once. Throw in Bernard's friend, who's hilariously bad at keeping all the lies straight, and the whole perfect setup might just fall apart. "Boeing Boeing", a slapstick farce from French playwright Marc Camoletti, has been performed in London and on Broadway and was made into a 1965 film starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis. "Boeing Boeing" now comes to the Sylvia Beard Theatre at the Buford Community Center. [less-]

August Wilson was one of America's most celebrated playwrights, and "Fences" was arguably his greatest work. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama -- as well as Tony Awards for Best Play and, decades later, Best Revival of a Play -- "Fences" is a powerful drama that tells the story of Troy Maxson. A former star of Negro League Baseball who now makes his living as a garbage man in 1957, Maxson is a man consumed with frustration concerning the color barrier that kept him from being a success in Major League Baseball. As he struggles to provide for his family, their relationships -- infected by bitterness -- suffer. A truly significant American play, the "New York Post" once hailed it as "one of the richest experiences I have ever had in the theatre." [less-]

Don't miss the Atlanta premiere of the brand-sparkling-new musical "Rocket Boys", based on the best-selling memoir of NASA engineer Homer Hickam Jr. Memorably translated to the big-screen in 1999's "October Sky" -- starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper and Laura Dern -- the inspiring tale of a coal-miner's son, who surrounds himself with initially skeptical friends as he pursues his dreams of rockets and space travel, now makes its way to the stage of the Legacy Theatre. As if the story wasn't already uplifting enough, it's now fueled by stirring songs that are sure to send its moving story into the stratosphere. "Psycho-biddy," also known as "hagsploitation," "hag horror" and "Grande Dame Guignol," is a term given to the bizarre spate of films in the 1960s that featured older, mentally unstable women losing their marbles in campy, violent ways. In movies like "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "Straight-Jacket", aging stars like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford chewed the scenery, wielded axes and took revenge. Paying homage to these cult classics is the new comic melodrama "Die, Mommie, Die!", which centers on Angela Andrews, an ex-pop singer trapped in a hateful marriage with film producer Sol Sussman. Angela is really in love with Tony, a young, out of work TV actor. Together, the lovers conspire to kill Sol with a poisoned suppository, leading to a surprise ending that reveals shocking family secrets. Atlanta favorite Topher Payne stars in this Process Theatre production at OnStage Atlanta. [less-]
