Fairy tales don't have a great track record with depictions of women. Just hearing the name conjures images of helpless princesses in towers pining away for Prince Charming to rescue them so they can live happily ever after. The fact that most of us grow up hearing these narratives makes their message all the more worrisome. But now, The Weird Sisters Theatre Project is taking back the fairy tale for the modern woman! "A Night of Twisted Tales" brings together new short plays from acclaimed female playwrights like Wendy MacLeod ("The House of Yes"), Lauren Gunderson ("Exit, Pursued By A Bear"), Deborah Zoe Laufer ("Leveling Up") and more. Each of them will put their own 21st-century spin on classic fairy tales for a refreshing night of entertainment by women and about women at Schwartz Center for Performing Arts' Theater Lab. [less-]

It's 1969, and change is in the air. But for Memphis Lee, the owner of a rundown diner in a struggling Pittsburgh neighborhood, the civil rights movement takes a back seat to more immediate problems. His diner has been slated for demolition in the city's urban renewal plan, but he has a competing offer from a predatory businessman. Caught between idealism and brutal reality, Memphis struggles to determine the fate of the place where his customers have gathered for decades to share their struggles, hopes and dreams. This New African Grove Theatre Company production of legendary Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's searing, humorous and potent portrait of African-American life in the '60s tells a complex story of the inner lives of ordinary people at a turning point in American history.
